Security tightened for road blockade

IMPHAL, SEPT. 19. Protests against special powers for the armed forces in Manipur are continuing unabated and, as part of the stir, the Apunba Lup has decided to block national highways in the State from midnight.

The working committee of the Apunba Lup, a grouping of 32 organisations spearheading the agitation in Manipur, said National Highways 39 and 53 would be blocked from midnight tonight.

Security has been strengthened ahead of the blockade and police patrolling has been intensified at strategic locations.

During the past 24 hours, incidents of burning of effigies of the Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil, and the Chief Minister, Okram Ibobi Singh, have been pouring in from different parts of the State. — UNI
