MYSORE, SEPT. 19. Perturbed by the abrupt withdrawal of security provided to him, the retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, Abdul Karim, has urged the Government to restore it in view of the threat to his life from Veerappan and his associates. In a letter to the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, Mr. Karim, who has been waging a relentless court battle to bring Veerappan and his gang members to justice, blamed the Mysore Police Commissioner, Bipin Gopalakrishna, for the withdrawal of security to him from September 17. Mr. Karim had been provided with round-the-clock security by the City Armed Reserve (CAR) since the last week of August 2000 when he moved the Supreme Court against the release of some people alleged to be Veerappan associates who had been detained under TADA, during the hostage crisis involving the matinee idol, Rajkumar.
`Inexplicable move'
"The most dangerous and inexplicable move of Mr. Gopalakrishna to withdraw security provided at my residence has exposed me and my family members to threats from Veerappan and his gang as well as from various mafia and extremist groups, which have been clandestinely supporting Veerappan," Mr. Karim said in the letter.
