Meet on `Basava dharma'

CHITRADURGA SEPT. 19. Basava Kendra of Sri Murugha Math, Chitradurga is organising a national-level convention on `Basava dharma' in New Delhi to commemorate the 900th birth anniversary of the social reformer, Basaveshwara, in April next. Special programmes have been chalked out to celebrate the event through out the year, said Shivamurthy Murugha Rajendra Swamiji, pontiff of the math.

Selection list notified

BANGALORE SEPT. 19. The Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) has notified the final selection list of candidates chosen to four posts of Tracer in the Department of Town Planning on the basis of the competitive examination conducted in February 2004. The notification is on display at the notice board of the KPSC and also on the commission's website http://kpsc.kar.nic.in.

Assumes charge of post

BANGALORE SEPT. 19. N.G. Srinivas has assumed charge as the Deputy Director-General, Prasar Bharati, South Zone. Mr. Srinivas has served in various stations of All India Radio and Doordarshan. He was the Deputy Director-General Prasar Bharati, Chennai, before coming to Bangalore.

Punaroor warns of legal action

MULKY SEPT. 19. The President of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Harikrishna Punaroor, has warned the Government of legal action if there is any more delay in implementing the Mahajan Commission report. Releasing a series of books brought out by a local publisher here today, Mr. Punaroor said the State Government should have taken the initiative in implementing the Mahajan Commission report.

Couple commit suicide

TUMKUR SEPT. 19. The bodies of a newly-married couple were found on the railway track at Heggere, near here, on Sunday. The railway police identified them as Shivakumar (25), son of Siddagangaiah, and Saroja alias Suji (21), daughter of Kantaraj, both residents of Bugudanahalli, near here. Post-mortem report, according to the police, confirmed that the couple had committed suicide by throwing themselves before a train in the early hours of the day. While a group of over 50 people claimed the body of Shivakumar, Saroja's body was claimed by her father. It is said that Shivakumar and Saroja had eloped a week ago sensing opposition from the boy's parents to their marriage. It is learnt that they got married elsewhere. It is said that they faced the wrath of the boy's brothers when they returned home. A case has been registered.

Air Force Day

MYSORE SEPT. 19. The Air Force Friends Association will celebrate Air Force Day on October 10. According to a press release, the association will honour meritorious children of the former Air Force personnel, who have excelled in seventh, tenth and PUC during the academic year 2003-2004. MYSORE SEPT. 19. The Inner Wheel Club of Mysore South East, in association with Bharath Diagnostic Centre, will conduct a free health check-up camp at the centre on September 22. Those interested may contact phone 2563007/ 5265260.

Trekking

MYSORE SEPT. 19. Rotary Mysore Adventure Corps, the adventure wing of Rotary Mysore, in association with IAMAS will conduct a three-day adventure camp in Thadiyendamol. The camp, commencing from October 1, will comprise yoga, meditation, forest camping and bird watching. Those interested may contact the Rotary Centre, J.L.B. Road or on phone 98451-11378/ 94485-07246/ 2420992.

Training

CHAMARAJANAGAR SEPT.19. RUDSET organisation, Mysore, in association with Winrok International will organise a three-day free training-cum-entrepreneurship development programme in solar equipments repair for unemployed youth in October 2004.

A press release from RUDSET organisation said that selected trainees would be provided free boarding and lodging during the training programme. Unemployed youth, aged between 18 and 25 years, from Mysore, Mandya and Chamarajanagar districts are eligible to apply. The aspirants should have knowledge of Kannada. Interested persons can write to the Director, RUDSET Organisation, Main Road, Hinkal, Mysore-570017 along with a self-addressed envelope with Rs. 5 stamp, before September 25.

Nagachar dead

Mysore Sept. 19. P. Nagachar (65), retired Joint Director of Information and Publicity, passed away here on Saturday evening following a heart attack. He is survived by wife and three children.

Nagachar served in the Department of Information and Publicity for nearly 35 years and had served in Mysore, Belgaum and other places during the course of his service. He also authored a book on journalism in Kannada and was deputed by the Department to the University of Mysore when it introduced the course at the post-graduate level.

Sixteen people arrested

Raichur Sept. 19. The Raichur police arrested 16 persons — Hanumangouda from Gunjalli Camp in Sindhanoor taluk, Mohammed Shafi, Gururaj, and five others from Manvi town, and Amaranna and seven others from Kotha village of Lingsugur taluk — while they were allegedly gambling on Friday. The arrested have been remanded in judicial custody.

Cases have been registered at the Turvihal, Manvi, and Hutti police stations.

Two killed

Raichur Sept. 19. Two persons were killed in as many road accidents in the Maski Police Station limits in Lingsugur taluk on Saturday.

The police said that Veeresh (28), son of Veerabhadrappa, was killed on the spot when he hit a boulder while trying to avoiding a collision with a tempo. The accident took place on the Maski-Mudgal Road near Medikinal village of Lingsugur taluk.

In another incident, Yellappa (33), son of Yamunappa, was injured when the autorickshaw in which he was travelling overturned and fell into a ditch on the Maski-Sindhanoor Road near Maski town. The Maski police have registered two separate cases.

Toddy seized

Raichur Sept. 19. The Raichur police arrested Mahaboob, Venkatesh, and Krishna, all from border villages of Andhra Pradesh, while they were allegedly selling spurious toddy in Vidyanagar and Ekbalnagar localities in Raichur city. The police also seized some quantity of illicit toddy and recovered Rs. 500 from them on Friday. The accused have been remanded in judicial custody.

The Netajinagar police have registered a case.

Music festival

UDUPI SEPT. 19. The Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Among Youth (SPIC-MACAY) will hold "Virasat - 2004," a festival of Indian music and dance, at Valley View in Manipal from September 22 to 30.

A press release issued by SPIC-MACAY said "Virasat - 2004" would be inaugurated at 6.30 p.m. It would be followed by a Carnatic vocal recital by T.N. Sheshagopala. "Purulia Chow," a West Bengal folk team, would perform on September 24. Padmaram and Maheshram would perform Rajasthani folk music on September 27.

Nayan Ghosh would give a sitar recital on September 28 while Darshana Zaveri would give a Manipuri performance the next day. Shivam Nambudri would perform "Koodiattam" on September 30. All the programmes would begin at 6.30 p.m., the release added.

Public hearing

BELGAUM SEPT. 19. The Karnataka Backward Class Commission will hold a public hearing and receive memorandums and complaints from members of backward classes here on Wednesday.

According to official sources, the Chairperson of the commission and its members will receive memorandums from the organisations representing backward classes at the Deputy Commissioner's office from 11 a.m.

Those who seek to submit memorandums should present at least eight copies in forms which can be collected from the office of the District Backward Classes and Minorities Commission adjacent to the Deputy Commissioner's office. All memorandums should be substantiated by necessary evidences and related information.
