Meet on `Basava dharma'
CHITRADURGA SEPT. 19. Basava Kendra of Sri Murugha Math, Chitradurga is organising a national-level convention on `Basava dharma' in New Delhi to commemorate the 900th birth anniversary of the social reformer, Basaveshwara, in April next. Special programmes have been chalked out to celebrate the event through out the year, said Shivamurthy Murugha Rajendra Swamiji, pontiff of the math.

Bangalore Sept. 19. The All-India Urdu Manch has appointed S. Abdul Samad as president of its State unit. M. Niazuddin Khan has been named secretary), and Taj Mohammed Khan, member of the State Advisory Committee.
Selection list notified
BANGALORE SEPT. 19. The Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) has notified the final selection list of candidates chosen to four posts of Tracer in the Department of Town Planning on the basis of the competitive examination conducted in February 2004. The notification is on display at the notice board of the KPSC and also on the commission's website http://kpsc.kar.nic.in.

Punaroor warns of legal action
MULKY SEPT. 19. The President of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Harikrishna Punaroor, has warned the Government of legal action if there is any more delay in implementing the Mahajan Commission report. Releasing a series of books brought out by a local publisher here today, Mr. Punaroor said the State Government should have taken the initiative in implementing the Mahajan Commission report.
Couple commit suicide
TUMKUR SEPT. 19. The bodies of a newly-married couple were found on the railway track at Heggere, near here, on Sunday. The railway police identified them as Shivakumar (25), son of Siddagangaiah, and Saroja alias Suji (21), daughter of Kantaraj, both residents of Bugudanahalli, near here. Post-mortem report, according to the police, confirmed that the couple had committed suicide by throwing themselves before a train in the early hours of the day. While a group of over 50 people claimed the body of Shivakumar, Saroja's body was claimed by her father. It is said that Shivakumar and Saroja had eloped a week ago sensing opposition from the boy's parents to their marriage. It is learnt that they got married elsewhere. It is said that they faced the wrath of the boy's brothers when they returned home. A case has been registered.

A press release from RUDSET organisation said that selected trainees would be provided free boarding and lodging during the training programme. Unemployed youth, aged between 18 and 25 years, from Mysore, Mandya and Chamarajanagar districts are eligible to apply. The aspirants should have knowledge of Kannada. Interested persons can write to the Director, RUDSET Organisation, Main Road, Hinkal, Mysore-570017 along with a self-addressed envelope with Rs. 5 stamp, before September 25.
Nagachar dead
Nagachar served in the Department of Information and Publicity for nearly 35 years and had served in Mysore, Belgaum and other places during the course of his service. He also authored a book on journalism in Kannada and was deputed by the Department to the University of Mysore when it introduced the course at the post-graduate level.
Sixteen people arrested
Cases have been registered at the Turvihal, Manvi, and Hutti police stations.
Two killed
The police said that Veeresh (28), son of Veerabhadrappa, was killed on the spot when he hit a boulder while trying to avoiding a collision with a tempo. The accident took place on the Maski-Mudgal Road near Medikinal village of Lingsugur taluk. In another incident, Yellappa (33), son of Yamunappa, was injured when the autorickshaw in which he was travelling overturned and fell into a ditch on the Maski-Sindhanoor Road near Maski town. The Maski police have registered two separate cases.

Music festival
A press release issued by SPIC-MACAY said "Virasat - 2004" would be inaugurated at 6.30 p.m. It would be followed by a Carnatic vocal recital by T.N. Sheshagopala. "Purulia Chow," a West Bengal folk team, would perform on September 24. Padmaram and Maheshram would perform Rajasthani folk music on September 27. Nayan Ghosh would give a sitar recital on September 28 while Darshana Zaveri would give a Manipuri performance the next day. Shivam Nambudri would perform "Koodiattam" on September 30. All the programmes would begin at 6.30 p.m., the release added.
Public hearing
According to official sources, the Chairperson of the commission and its members will receive memorandums from the organisations representing backward classes at the Deputy Commissioner's office from 11 a.m. Those who seek to submit memorandums should present at least eight copies in forms which can be collected from the office of the District Backward Classes and Minorities Commission adjacent to the Deputy Commissioner's office. All memorandums should be substantiated by necessary evidences and related information.
