Probe into nod for new colleges sought

By Our Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM, SEPT. 19. The Mahatma Gandhi University Employees Association has demanded an inquiry into the controversy surrounding the sanctioning of self-financing institutions and courses at the MG University.

According to K. Sherafuddin, general secretary of the association, they would submit a memorandum in this regard to the Governor during his scheduled visit to the University on Monday.

Norms violated

According Mr. Sherafuddin, nearly 80 self-financing institutions have been sanctioned by the present Syndicate during the past one year or more. These were sanctioned without adhering to the norms prescribed in the Acts and Statutes, he alleged. Neither has the Syndicate adhered to the annual cut off date (January 31) prescribed for submitting applications for such institutions, nor have they followed the procedure for inspection of the sites before according sanction, he said.

Documents fake

The recent inquiry by the Vigilance Wing of the University has found at least in two cases, the documents produced in support of land ownerships were fake, he said and pointed out that a detailed and comprehensive inquiry should be instituted to bring out the real picture. The recognition accorded to such institutions should be cancelled forthwith, he said.

The Governor, R. L. Bhatia, will be at the campus on Monday in connection with the commissioning of the Sports Pavilion at the campus. The School of Physical Education which had been functioning from a rented facility so far, would now be housed at the campus.
