KOZHIKODE, SEPT. 19. A national seminar on sacred groves which concluded here on Saturday recommended that the social forestry wing of the State Forest Department be made the nodal agency for conservation and management of sacred groves. At the end of three days of discussions and talks by forest managers, conservationists and sacred grove owners, the seminar also recommended extensive awareness programmes by the social forestry wing to conserve sacred groves, encouragement of initiatives that were already being made and a survey and registration number to each sacred grove. Tax exemption for contributions made to sacred grove conservation, financial support of local bodies and institution of an award for initiatives of sacred grove conservation and management were also recommended by the seminar organised jointly by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the Forest Department and Oisca.
