PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 19. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, has welcomed the decision of the Centre to declare Tamil a classical language. Talking to presspersons here today, he said that the Union Territory Assembly had adopted a unanimous resolution during the last budget session and forwarded it to the Centre to declare Tamil a classical language. Mr. Rangasamy said he would visit Delhi in a fortnight's time and would reiterate the plea of Pondicherry Government for sanction of Statehood with special category status for the Union Territory, during his meetings with the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister. There was also a proposal with the government to start a school in the cooperative sector. A school run by the management of Cooperative Sugar Mill at Lingareddypalayam near here had been producing good results.
DMK rally
A large number of volunteers of Pondicherry unit of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) including the party legislators took out a rally here on Saturday to celebrate the announcement of the Central Government declaring Tamil a classical language. The participants led by the convenor of the party and the Leader of the opposition in the Assembly, R.V. Janakiraman, also distributed `laddus` to the people to hail the decision.
