Cuddapah
By Our Staff Reporter
CUDDAPAH, SEPT. 19. The festival of Vinayaka Chavithi was celebrated with gaiety in Cuddapah district on Saturday and idols of Ganesh were put up in towns and villages. A large number of devout Hindus thronged the temples in the district, performing pujas in pandals where Ganesh idols of different shapes and sizes were installed. The pandals were illuminated and devotional songs rented the air. The festival passed off peacefully; policemen had been posted in communally sensitive areas, including R.S. Road in Cuddapah town. A Vinayaka idol made with 20 kgs of chocolate at the business centre, B.K.M. Street, an idol of mustard in the Matti Peddapuli area, and idols of Vinayaka, Siva and Parvathi against a backdrop of Kailasagiri forests and mountains in Ravindranagar in Cuddapah town attracted a crowd. About 120 Ganesh idols were installed in Cuddapah town, and a few hundreds in Proddatur, Jammalamadugu, Pulivendula, Mydukur, Rajampet, Badvel, Rayachoti and other parts of the district. The Cuddapah DSP, M. Ramprasada Rao, and police personnel offered puja at the idol in Cuddapah One Town police station. At the behest of the police, 14 persons took an oath before an idol in Simhadripuram in Pulivendula constituency that they would give up matka gambling. Some idols were immersed in the KC Canal, Pathacuddapah tank and other places on Saturday. The rest will be immersed on Monday; the police are making bandobust arrangements.
