Bank working days

Sir,_The public notice in The Hindu on September 9 by the State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH) says that `to improve services to customers, the weekly holiday of some of the branches of the bank are changed to Sunday from Tuesday'. But all the branches the bank mentioned are in residential colonies and work on Sundays to cater to the customers who are mostly employees and opened accounts only because these branches worked on Sundays.

If the bank management is interested in improving the services to customers, it should work on all days in a week like some public sector banks. Changing the weekly holiday from Tuesday to Sunday will only make the customers suffer.

Raw deal to

VPT pensioners

Sir,_The orders of the Ministry of Surface Transport on the voluntary retirement scheme implemented in the Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) and Visakhapatnam Dock Labour Board (VDLB) mentions payment of three/one month Notice Pay to the VRS retirees as per their service conditions. But the VPT officials conveniently eliminated this particular clause of Notice Pay, causing severe financial loss to the pensioner, which works out to about Rs. 30,000 per employee.

Since nearly ten years this money is locked with the VPT which is dragging the issue and I wonder how such Government orders are ignored. I seek the personal intervention of the VPT chairman to look into the matter and implement the Government orders. The VPT should respect the legal advise given by the Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, who also sought consideration of the pensioners' request for three months notice pay in view of the Government orders.

Underground

drainage charges

Sir,_While the decision of the Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (VMC) to revise the underground drainage (UGD) charges based on house-tax is welcome, it cannot be appreciated by those who had already paid higher charges unless the excess amount paid by them is adjusted towards house-tax payable in the future.

But we are unhappy that a VMC official has declared that the excess amount collected in the past would not be adjusted or refunded in the case of people who had promptly followed the VMC advise earlier.

Extending benefit only to the protestors cannot be a wise decision and I request the VMC authorities to extend the benefit to all. Otherwise, this will create a wrong impression in the minds of the people that nothing should be paid to the VMC immediately and only delays would benefit them.

Statue for Sarvepalli

Sir,_During the Teachers' Day celebrations when I was felicitated by the Andhra University administration, I thanked the university for naming the College of Arts in the University Campus at Waltair as Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan College of Arts. I requested the Vice-Chancellor to install a life-size statue of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan in a central place in the university campus as the latter has served as the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University.

A former Vice-Chancellor, late Justice A. Sambasiva Rao, stated at one of the meetings in the university that it was his desire to install a life-size statue of Dr. Radhakrishnan in the university campus. But a few days later, he was appointed as Lok Ayuktha and left the university to take up the prestigious assignment at Hyderabad, without translating his desire into action.

Contract lecturers' posts

Sir,_For the last three years, the responsibility of appointing contract lecturers in junior and degree colleges has been entrusted to the principals of the colleges concerned. The principals formed a committee and appointed candidates as they liked and on the recommendations of those who mattered to them, without observing roster point or merit in marks. This process of appointments caused grave injustice to the meritorious candidates. We are not aware whether the rules issued by the Government, if any, are followed in this regard. The committee has neither conducted written tests to consider meritorious candidates nor observed the roster-backlog or current roster point. So, before confirming the said appointments, the authorities concerned are requested to scan the appointments done on contract basis.
