THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 19. The CPI State secretary, Veliyam Bhargavan, has asked the Government to immediately cancel the no objection certificate (NOC) issued to a private company for mineral sand-mining on the Arattupuzha coast and hold an inquiry into how the NOC was given without Cabinet approval. In a statement here today, Mr. Bhargavan said the Government decision was the result of manipulations by vested interests and involved large-scale corruption. The previous Antony Government had given up its move to allow mining in the area only because of stiff resistance put up by the people. The Congress leaders, V.M. Sudheeran and K.C. Venugopal, were also in the forefront of that struggle. Mr. Venugopal was now a member of the Cabinet and it was clear that the NOC was issued without the knowledge of the Chief Minister or the Cabinet, he said. Referring to the Chief Minister's claim that he was in the dark about the decision, the CPI leader said he should then take the initiative to bring the guilty to light.
