PALAKKAD, SEPT. 19. The raid against fake lottery traders in the district has unearthed cheating of crores of rupees.

In the last one-week, fake lottery tickets worth Rs. 95 crores were seized in raids in the district by the Department of Lottery and the police. So far, fake lottery tickets worth Rs. 125 crores were seized in the district since May this year.

In the raids conducted on Sunday, lottery tickets worth Rs. 10 crores claimed to be that of Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh Governments were seized from Aparna Lodge in Chittur Road here. These tickets were stored in three rooms of the lodge by Golden Agencies. The police arrested the lodge manager, Mohandas, and six workers of the lottery agency hailing from Tamil Nadu.

In the raid conducted on Saturday, fake lottery tickets worth Rs. 19.50 crores were seized from different parts of the district and from a truck at the Walayar inter-State check post. Fake tickets worth Rs. 4.20 crores were seized from the truck.

Tickets came from Delhi

The sales tax officials who checked the truck found that the tickets were in the name of Government of Arunachal Pradesh. They were brought from New Delhi to B.S. Enterprises of Kunnathurmedu in the town here. The truck driver, Satheesh Kumar, a resident of Haryana, was arrested.

Fake tickets, including the banned single-digit lottery tickets, worth Rs. 15 crores were seized from Fortune Agencies at Akshaya Nagar in Kadamcode.

Officials said that lottery agents from Tamil Nadu had set up their offices in Palakkad as the sale of lottery was banned in that State. These agents approached various State Governments and promised to do lottery business as per the Central Lotteries Regulation Act of 1998.

But these traders did the business violating the Act. There was no action against them till recently allegedly due to their clout with politicians and some top officials.
