HYDERBAD, SEPT. 19. The Communist Party of India (CPI) Central Committee member, Hashim Faizi, has said that certain "communal parties," which tasted defeat in the recent elections, are making a desperate bid to return to power "by inciting trouble and creating rift" between minorities and secular forces.
Dig at BJP
Speaking at the State-level minorities conference organised by the party here on Sunday, Mr. Faizi said Left parties should ensure that minorities did not get distanced from secular parties. "People have temporarily halted the march of communal forces," he said. Taking a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he alleged that the BJP that had never hoisted the national tri-colour at the party headquarters is now expressing newfound love for it.
Quota for minorities
He flayed the NDA Government for attempting to saffronise the education system. He lamented that the BJP had wasted time of Parliament by raking up the issue of Veer Savarkar and Uma Bharti. He said the State Government had earmarked 5 per cent quota for minorities based on the socio-economic conditions but certain parties had obtained a stay on the issue. He asked minorities to achieve reservation through Article 16 of the Constitution. Retired professor of Osmania University, Mogini Tabassum, presided. The World Trade Union Federation chief, K.L. Mahendra, the CPI State assistant secretary, K. Narayana, a State committee member, Aziz Pasha, and the CPI Floor leader, Chada Venkat Reddy, spoke.
