HYDERABAD, SEPT. 19. The People's War has called for a bandh on September 25 in the State to express solidarity with the struggle of the people of Manipur and to bring pressure on the Central Government to concede their demands. The call has been given by the PW Andhra Pradesh, Andhra-Orissa Special Zonal and Telangana Special Zonal Committees. Ramakrishna, secretary of CPI (ML) People's War, in a statement said the demands of the people of Manipur included immediate withdrawal of the army and scrapping of the Armed Forces Special Act.
`Army atrocities'
The PW leader recalled the alleged torture and rape of Tungajam Manorama by armymen on July 11 and her subsequent murder four days later and the people's agitation against the army's `atrocities' during the last 30 years. He criticised the Government of India for its alleged indifferent attitude and the Union Home Minsiter, Shivraj Patil, for his statement offering, if necessary, to withdraw the Assam Rifles from Manipur. He said the people's struggle has been on since 2000 when a woman activist, Iram Sharmila, launched an indefinite hunger strike at a hospital, who told the State Chief Minister, when he wanted her to give up the fast, that she would do so only after scrapping of the Act.
