KOLLAM, SEPT. 19. The Latin Catholic Aikya Vedi (LCAV) has called upon the State Government to revoke the NOC granted for mineral sand-mining. At a press conference here today, the State president of the LCAV, James Fernandez, said that the LCAV would oppose any mining activity along the coastline. He said that the Vedi will be constituting a volunteer corps for the purpose. Though it was on the basis of a High Court order that the NOC had been given, the Vedi alleged that an Aluva based company could obtain the court order since the State Government failed to convey the realities of the issue to the High Court. In such a situation the Government should now withdraw the NOC and approach the Court with a review prayer.
Coastal authority
The LCAV registered its protest over the failure of the UDF Government to honour the election manifesto promise of constituting a Coastal Area Development Authority. He said that the main reason for the Latin Catholic community supporting the UDF in the last Assembly elections was on the basis of this assurance in the manifesto. The State Government should also convey to the Centre that licences granted to foreign trawling ships which expires this month should not be renewed.
Ministry of Fisheries
The Vedi also called for a separate Ministry for Fisheries at the Centre. The Latin Catholic community should be given due representation while filling up the vacancies in the Kerala PSC. The community is being sidelined while making appointments to the various boards, corporations and committees, Mr. Fernandez alleged. The general secretary of the Vedi, F.J. Alphonse, was also present.
