Kollam
By Our Staff Reporter
KOLLAM, SEPT. 19. The Kollam Residents Apex Council has submitted 25 proposals to the Traffic Advisory Committee for the improvement of the traffic system in the city. The council proposes creation of a bus terminal for the city at the open space opposite the Mahatma Gandhi park near the Kollam beach. A stop in front of the Hantex showroom should be allowed for buses entering Chinnakada through the Shencotta-Kollam road. Overtaking should be banned in the Chinnakada area and other than the authorised bus-stands, buses should not be allowed to remain stationary along the Chinnakada road to pick up commuters.
Shift bus stops
Bus stops at the Thattamala junction should be suitably shifted as it is an accident-prone point. The traffic system at the accident-prone Kappalandi Mukku should also be reorganised. A traffic island should be constructed at the centre of the Reserve Camp junction. Traffic police should be deputed at the SN College junction both in the morning and evening on working days.
Traffic deviation
Traffic deviation should be effected for the vehicles entering the city from the Anchalumoodu side. The present bus stop at the Collectorate junction should be shifted to the area facing the canteen. The railway station stop of the buses coming from Chinnakada should be shifted to the Karbala road from the present site.
Parking bays
Parking bays should be opened at the Press Club Maidan, Clock Tower Maidan and at the Andamukham private bus stand. The Andamukham bus stand should be shifted to the beach area. There is also the need for regulation of autorickshaw stands in the city by setting up authorised stands at suitable locations.
