Heroin seized

SALEM SEPT. 19. Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB) personnel have seized half a kilogram of heroin powder worth Rs. 50 lakhs at Seelanickenpatti, near here, last night.

On a tip-off, a team laid a trap on Seelanickenpatti bypass road, near here. On suspicion, the team members detained D. Vasanth (43), an inmate of the Kottapatti Sri Lankan refugee camp in Tiruchi. The team found in his possession heroin packed in a polythene bag.

He was booked under the provisions of 8 (c) read with 21 (c) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

PMK man's body found

VILLUPURAM Sept. 19. The body of a Pattali Makkal Katchi functionary, Kuppusamy (32), was found floating in a well at Nannadu, near Tirukkoilur, on Saturday morning.

It is said Kuppusamy, Kaanai union PMK youth wing secretary, accompanied party leaders on Friday to pay homage at the memorials of those who sacrificed their lives for securing reservation for Vanniyars. He was said to have boarded a bus at Villupuram in the night for his native place in Nathai, near Kalpattu, but never reached home.

On a complaint from Gunasekaran, younger brother of the deceased, the police secured Thirumalai (28) and Suresh (27) of Thogaipadi.

Villagers catch robbers

CUDDALORE Sept. 19. The people of Melur at Avinankudi, near here, today caught two members of a robber gang escaping with valuables looted from the house of a farmer, M. Krishnan. It is said the gang entered Mr. Krishnan's house by removing the rear window. On hearing noise, Mr. Krishnan raised an alarm, alerting the villagers. The villagers are said to have recovered 40 sovereigns of gold jewellery. They handed over the duo to the police. The police have launched a manhunt for their accomplices.

Protest holds up train

TIRUCHI SEPT. 19. The Chennai - Erode express suffered detention for about 20 minutes at Ariyalur early today after a few passengers squatted in front of the engine following a reported scuffle between a ticket examiner and a passenger.

Railway sources here said the ticket examiner boarded the general compartment to check the tickets. An argument reportedly broke out between him and a passenger, which reportedly ended in a minor scuffle.

Protesting this, a few passengers squatted in front of the engine. The train guard and the driver pacified the passengers to board the train.

2 killed as auto overturns

ERODE SEPT. 19. Two women were crushed to death when an autorickshaw overturned and fell into a roadside pit on Friday evening.

The police said an autorickshaw carrying 10 women labourers was going from Mevani to Thalakombu, near Gobichettipalayam. When it came near the Kal Muniappaswamy temple, the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned and fell into a pit. Gayathri (16) and Santhy (30) were crushed to death on the spot. Seven other women travelling in the vehicle sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Gobichettipalayam Government Hospital.

Two die in van-bus collision

Tirunelveli Sept. 19. A bridegroom and his mother were killed when the van in which they were travelling collided with a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus near Palayamkottai yesterday. The police said Baby (45) of Kochchivilai, near Thiruvananthapuram; her son, Rai (25), the bridegroom; and their relatives — Kevin, Charlotte and Powli, also from Kochchivilai — were coming to Tirunelveli to purchase clothes for the wedding. The van hit the Madurai-Nagercoil TNSTC bus near Sengulam on the Nagercoil national highway, killing Ms. Baby on the spot. Mr. Rai, who was driving the van, succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital.

Hospitalised for food poisoning

Tirunelveli Sept. 19. Six pavement dwellers near the new bus stand here were admitted to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital today with symptoms of food poisoning.

Hospital sources said Selvaraj (40), Pazhanisamy (45), his wife, Lakshmi (40), his children, Sundari (20), Kaladevi (17), and Ilaiyaraja (15) had nausea after taking tea last night. They were said to be out of danger.

DYFI rally for more jobs

CHENNAI SEPT.19. Activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) took part in a procession and special meet here today demanding measures to enhance job opportunities in urban and rural areas in the State.

The State committee said the meet focussed on problems created by the Government's ban on recruitment and the need for setting up agro-based industries at a cost of Rs. 1 crore in each block, filling up thousands of vacancies, distributing wasteland to landless peasants and implementing the Sethusamudram project. The rally was flagged off by CPI (M) leader, N. Sankariah, at Saidapet.
