Announcing this here over the week-end, the Minister of State for Urban Development and Housing, Pratap Singh Singhvi, said a committee of legal experts was currently engaged in the exercise to formulate the draft of the new law. "The old Municipal Act had several shortcomings which had rendered it obsolete in the present conditions,'' he said.
Mr. Singhvi pointed out that the old law had no reference to the provision of fire safety and was silent about the fire brigade services. Moreover, it was not comprehensive enough to cover all activities of municipal bodies, he added.
The Minister's observations came at a workshop organised jointly by the Union Ministry of Urban Development, State Government's Local Bodies Department, National Institute of Urban Affairs, State Institute of Public Administration and the Fire Project.
M. Rajamani, Joint Secretary in the Union Ministry of Urban Development, said the amendments to the municipal laws should be made in such a manner that the local bodies get the maximum opportunities to benefit from the Centre's projects and subsidies.
Among others, the Jaipur Mayor, Sheel Dhabhai, Secretary, Local Bodies, Manjeet Singh, and the Director, Local Bodies, S.K. Sharma, were present on the occasion. Besides the Rajasthan Government officials, those from Madhya Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh also participated in the workshop.
