Parties welcome decision to countermand bypoll

LUCKNOW, SEPT. 19. While most political parties have hailed the Election Commission decision to countermand the bypoll for Akbarpur Lok Sabha seat on October 13, the Uttar Pradesh Government is busy reviewing possible lapses that led to the situation.

According to official sources, the State Government has sought explanation from erring officials - District Magistrate of Ambedkarnagar D C Bhargava and Additional DM (Faizabad) Mahendra Singh - over the controversy.

The State Government took the action after the EC asked it to take action against the two officials by September 20 as they were responsible for violating norms in the issuance of notification for the Akbarpur seat.

According to norms, the DM has to appoint the ADM as the Returning Officer but instead he himself became the RO and even accepted one nomination paper.

The EC had scrapped the election process there on Friday night and asked the State Government to remove the DM and sent a panel of names of officials to be appointed there as a new DM.

Meanwhile, Bahujan Samaj Party claimed the violation of norms by the officials was at the behest of the ruling party and claimed it proved the conspiracy hatched by the Samajwadi Party to rig the bypolls. But the SP leaders maintained the lapses were on the part of the official and the party had nothing to do with it.

However, the BSP leaders, Congress and BJP have hailed the EC decision to suspend the election process in Akbarpur.

Byelection to Akbharpur (Reserved) Lok Sabha seat is important for all political parties as the BSP stronghold was vacated by Ms Mayawati after she was elected to Rajya Sabha.

The ruling SP had fielded State Minister Sant Lal Manji, who was defeated by Mayawati in the April-May elections by a margin of over 50,000 votes. -- UNI
