For the Kashmiri kids

NEW DELHI SEPT. 19. Springdales School in Dhaula Kuan organised a special assembly this past week in association with Manford Centre for Peace to provide help to the underprivileged children of Kashmir. The founder of Manford Centre, Anand David, was present on the occasion.

The project aims at providing help to the deprived Kashmiri children to find a world beyond their strife-filled environment. The programme revolves around the conflict affected children and young adults of Kashmir.

According to the School principal, Jyoti Bose, "the project is a small attempt to mainstream the underprivileged children of Kashmir with the children of our school through a one-year programme". "Springdales School has been working to create a bond of empathy and friendship with the children who are destined to live in less normal circumstances," she added.

Literary week celebrated

NEW DELHI SEPT. 19. "Confluence-2004" -- a joint celebration of the literary week by the English and Hindi Departments of Delhi Public School, Noida -- concluded on September 17.

The literary week witnessed a large number of competitions in which 1,200 students from Classes VI to VII participated.

Besides enactment of plays like "Pygmalion" "Chandragupta" and "Doctor Faustus", there were also poetry recitation, debates and dramatic adaptations of famous stories from Hindi literature.

The Chairman of Delhi Public School Society (DPSS), Narendra Kumar, and its Co-Chairman, Ashok Chandra were some of the eminent guests at the celebration.

Seminar on role of prayer

NEW DELHI SEPT. 19. A seminar on "The Role of Prayer and Meditation For a Peaceful world" was held at the Siri Fort Auditorium here on Saturday. It was part of the ongoing International Human Unity Conference organised by the Sawan Kirpal Ruhani Mission in the Capital which will conclude on Monday.

Speaking at the seminar, the President of the World Council of Religions, Sant Rajinder Ji Maharaj, said: "In order to be truly peaceful we should have only one desire -- to commune with God. We need to follow the practices and teachings of the great saints and mystics."

The Arch Bishop from Uganda, John Bapist, drew the attention to the open conflicts going around the world, many in the name of religion, and expressed his joy over meeting the deeply spiritual people of India.

Dance competition held

NEW DELHI SEPT. 19. A religious-cum-cultural dance competition was organised by Tarun Mitra Parishad -- a social service organisation -- at Shri Parashvanath Digamber Jain Temple in Laxmi Nagar on the occasion of Dashlakshan Mahaparva today. The Delhi Finance Minister, A.K. Walia, and the Delhi Mayor, A.R. Verma -- who were the chief guests -- honoured the 28 participants.

Director appointed

NEW DELHI SEPT. 19. J. Haque has been appointed as the new Director (Operation) of the Power Grid Corporations of India Limited. He has a vast experience in the Central power sector undertaking spanning over three decades and had previously worked in a senior level position in the National Thermal Power Corporation. The post had been laying vacant for the past several months after his predecessor, Bhanu Bhushan, joined the Central Electricity Authority as its member. Mr. Haque earlier was Executive Director Operations in the Power Grid, an official release said.
