TIRUVALLUR, SEPT. 19. The Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and Union Minister for Railways, Lalu Prasad, has thanked the voters of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh for routing the `fascist forces' led by the Bharatiya Janata Party in the recent Lok Sabha elections. He was speaking at a function held at Tiruvallur station to mark the inauguration of the fourth line between Pattabiram and Tiruvallur yesterday. Apart from improving passenger amenities, steps have been initiated to help youth appearing for State Government interviews to travel free from their native place to the interview destination, recruitment of youth for the Railway Protection Force, filling up of 84,000 vacancies in `D' group staff category and a drive to clear backlog posts reserved for SC/ST and OBC categories. The Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, replying to a point raised by the Tamil Nadu Transport Minister, R. Viswanathan, said allocations for railway projects were being made based on a specific formula and no State had been allocated additional or extra funds.
Rs. 1 lakh for rail staff
It was a pleasant surprise for railway staff at Tiruvallur. Normally, a pat on the back or words of commendation from their `bosses' will be the only accolade they receive for work well done. Much to their surprise, the Railway Minister announced a Rs. 1 lakh `reward' for the staff who had made `meticulous' arrangements for the inaugural function at the Tiruvallur station.
