Dies of rat fever

UDUPIUDUPIMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALORE, SEPT. 19.SEPT. 19.SE One person died of rat fever at Manipal on Saturday.

The District Health and Family Welfare Officer, F.A. Kazi, told The Hindu today that the person had died of rat fever at a hospital in Manipal on Saturday. Two more cases of rat fever had been reported from Kaup in the district, Dr. Kazi added.

Music festival

UDUPIUDUPIMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALORE, SEPT. 19.SEPT. 19.SE The Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Among Youth (SPIC-MACAY) will hold "Virasat - 2004," a festival of Indian music and dance, at Valley View in Manipal from September 22 to 30.

A press release issued by SPIC-MACAY said "Virasat - 2004" would be inaugurated at 6.30 p.m. It would be followed by a Carnatic vocal recital by T.N. Sheshagopala. "Purulia Chow," a West Bengal folk team, would perform on September 24. Padmaram and Maheshram would perform Rajasthani folk music on September 27.

Nayan Ghosh would give a sitar recital on September 28 while Darshana Zaveri would give a Manipuri performance the next day. Shivam Nambudri would perform "Koodiattam" on September 30. All the programmes would begin at 6.30 p.m., the release added.

Stolen

UDUPIUDUPIMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALORE, SEPT. 19.SEPT. 19.SE Gold and silver ornaments and masks used in the worship of spirits all worth Rs. 15 lakhs have been stolen from an ancient house at Bellur near Belthangady.

The theft was noticed on Thursday. The house which belongs to Nabhiraja Ajiri has a history of 600 years.

Mr. Ajiri, who resides at Puttur, had appointed a person to look after the house. The person noticed the theft on Thursday when he came to clean the "Bhootha Chavadi" (room meant for the worship of spirits). The masks and ornaments were kept in a wooden box, which was found broken, the police said.

The Belthangady Police have registered a case.

Applications

UDUPIUDUPIMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALORE, SEPT. 19.SEPT. 19.SE Mangalore University has invited applications for undergraduate and postgraduate courses through distance education.

A press release from the Director of the Distant Education Cell, G.V. Joshi, said B.A. B.Com., BBM, M.A., and M.Com. courses would be offered through distance education. To popularise distance education, the university had extended the last date for receiving applications to October 15.

Packets

UDUPIUDUPIMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALORE, SEPT. 19.SEPT. 19.SE The Mangalore Agriculturists' Souharda Sahakari will release small packets of areca nut weighing one kg and two kg on Tuesday.

The Chief Whip of the ruling party, K. Abhayachandra Jain, would release the packets at a function in Padil, a release said.
