CPI(M) seeks immediate removal of V-C

By Our Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM, SEPT. 19. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) wants the recall of the Andhra University Vice-Chancellor, Y.C. Simhadri, without delay under "the pretext of the decision to order a judicial probe."

"There is no need for a judicial inquiry. The delay in his removal makes one suspect that the Congress Government is trying to shield Prof. Simhadri," the CPI (M) State secretary, B.V. Raghavulu, told reporters on Sunday.

He said that though they had represented to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, no action was forthcoming from him.

Even a judicial commission had not been constituted so far, despite a specific promise made in the Assembly several months ago, he added.

Mr. Raghavulu said due to patronage of the Telugu Desam Party, Prof. Simhadri had continued in the post unscathed even after issuing several "undemocratic" circulars and punishing several teaching and non-teaching staff and students.

New hospital

After the change in Government, everyone thought Prof. Simhadri would be shown the door, he said, and demanded the reinstatement of all the dismissed professors and others without further delay.

Supporting the plea of the local MP and MLAs for locating a multi-speciality hospital in Visakhapatnam on the lines of the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad, Mr. Raghavulu said a section of bureaucrats had prevented the proposal from getting the nod of the Government.

He said Visakhapatnam was an important centre in north Andhra and a multi-speciality hospital would go a long way in meeting the region's requirement. Instead of building a multi-speciality hospital here, some bureaucrats wanted to upgrade the NIMS on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), he said.

`Rescue BHPV'

Expressing concern over the attachment of Bharat Heavy Plate and Vessels assets by the Provident Fund Organisation, Mr. Raghavulu said the Centre should come to its rescue.

Before referring it to the Board of Industrial Finance and Restructuring (BIFR), the Union Government should give aid to BHPV in meeting its statutory commitment, he said.

He also wanted payment of compensation to farmers without insisting on title deeds for lands acquired from them for the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and withdrawal of show-cause notices issued by the port authorities to three employees of the Dock Labour Board for their involvement in the recent strike.

The CPI (M) district secretariat member, V.S. Padmanabha Raju, was present.
