VISAKHAPATNAM, SEPT. 19. A reporter belonging to a Telugu daily, N. Nageswara Rao, along with the secretary of the All-India Hobie-Cat Association, D. Bharadwaj, set off on an arduous 9,000 km Bharat Darshan Yatra on motorcycles from here on Sunday.
Duo praised
The Mayor, Rajana Ramani, flagged off the expedition from near the Gandhiji statue opposite the Tenneti Bhavanam (Municipal Corporation office) in the presence of a large number of sports lovers and media personnel. Ms. Ramani appreciated the duo for taking up the difficult task and wished them success. The president of the Andhra Pradesh Volleyball Association, S. Kodandaramiah, too wished them good luck and hoped the almighty made the tour a success.
Pamphlet released
Ms. Ramani released an informative pamphlet `road safety, no accidents' brought out by the city branches of the Rashtriya Life Saving Society and the Youth Hostels Association of India (YHAI) and the Gopichand Medical and Research Centre. Talking to reporters before starting their journey, Mr. Nageswara Rao and Mr. Bharadwaj, said that road safety was an important aspect but was being neglected. A large percentage of victims of road accidents were two-wheeler drivers or pillion riders. 0The accidents were happening due to minor mistakes in some cases and unfortunately not many were aware of the basic road rules. The tour, covering 17 States was expected to last seven to eight weeks. The flagging off ceremony was organised by the Vizag Journalists Forum (VJF) and the Visakha Sports Journalists Association (ViSJA). The secretary, NVLN Rao, and the treasurer, G. Janardhan, of the VJF, the vice-president, Uma Shankar Babu, treasurer, B.S. Ramachandra Rao, and other members of the ViSJA, were present. The Additional Commissioner of the VMC, Asha Jyothi, the secretary of the District Olympic Association, M. Syam Babu, the secretary of the District Amateur Boxing Association and a corporator, G.V. Raviraju, were present on the occasion.
