Meet on corrosion control begins today

By Our Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM, SEPT. 19. Nearly 200 delegates from different industrial sectors like refineries, petrochemicals, fertilisers, oil and gas production, paints and nuclear infrastructures will participate in the 12th National Congress on Corrosion Control, which is to begin here on Monday.

Speaking to reporters here on Sunday, the Chairman of the National Corrosion Council of India (NCCI) and Deputy Director of the Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CECRI) at Karaikkudi, N. Palaniswamy, said 120 technical papers would be presented during the three-day Congress, spread over 11 technical sessions on process industries, oil and gas production, nuclear and thermal power, cathodic protection, biofouling and marine corrosion, water treatment, coatings, surface engineering and materials, monitoring and management, concrete corrosion, corrosion inhibitors and basic aspects of corrosion.

Open session

"There will also be 17 lectures by experts from the industry and an open session on industrial corrosion problems. Follow-up action needed to solve corrosion problems through interaction with relevant institutions will be discussed. Frontier areas for thrust will be identified," he said.

The CECRI, founded in 1948, was the parent organisation of the NCCI and had three extension research and development centres located at Chennai, Mandapam and Thoothukkudi. It was doing research and development work in nine wings of electrochemical sciences and technology --corrosion science and engineering, electrochemical power systems, inorganic and organic electrochemicals, industrial metal finishing, electro metallurgy, electrodics and electrocatalysis, electrochemical materials science, instrumentation and pollution control, he said.

Objectives

The NCCI's objectives were to stimulate national research in corrosion science and engineering, provide an organisation within the framework of which corrosion scientists and engineers could meet and exchange ideas, conserve equipment, materials and natural resources and improve operating safety of structures and encourage practical application of research results through education and training. It also aimed at organising meetings, lectures, symposia and seminars and collaborating with other bodies in India and abroad pursuing similar aims, Dr. Palaniswamy said.

He said the CECRI had successfully developed socially important technologies like defluoridation of drinking water, eco-friendly technology for aluminium production by using non-carbon anodes, recovery of copper from PCB industrial etchants, different types of electroplating technologies for industrial purposes, tools and dye-making by electroforming, recovery of lead from secondary sources, different types of lead acid batteries, and the latest - a cement polymer composite coating system for protecting steel rebar from corrosion. At present, the CECRI was engaged in advanced R & D activities in fuel cells, nano materials for different applications, biosensors and corrosion monitoring, he added.
