Temperature

MADURAI, SEPT. 19. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 34.4 degree Celsius and a minimum of 24.7 degree Celsius.

Water level

The level in Periyar dam stood at 114.20 feet, with an inflow of 625 cusecs and a discharge of 600 cusecs.

The level in Vaigai dam was 38.12 feet, with an inflow of 468 cusecs and a discharge of 30 cusecs.

The combined Periyar storage was 2,319 mcft.

Manjalar dam recorded the highest rainfall of 48 mm, followed by Sattayar dam — 29 mm, Kallandhiri — 16 mm, Peranai — 15 mm, Andipatti — 15 mm, Pulipatti — 15 mm, Chittampatti — 12 mm, Periyar dam — 9 mm, Madurai — 3 mm and Tekkadi — 2mm.

Honoured

S. Balasubramaniam, Divisional Manager, Canara Bank, explained the educational loans offered by the bank.

He was addressing a Teachers' Day function got off by the South Veli Street branch of the bank here recently.

Pon Kumar, District Elementary Education Officer, who was the chief guest, urged teachers to inculcate human values in students.

Arumugam, headmaster, Madurai Corporation Middle School, and a recipient of the national award for best teacher, was honoured.

Donated

The Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) donated Rs.16 lakhs to Aravind Eye Hospital on Friday for setting up of Aravind-IOB Eye Bank in Coimbatore.

In 2002, the bank donated Rs.10 lakhs to the hospital for the purchase of `pachomulsifier'.

For setting up `IOB Research Grant', the bank donated Rs.10 lakhs in 2003.

S.C. Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, IOB, G. Venkataswamy, Chairman, Aravind Eye Hospital, P. Namperumalsamy, Director, G. Srinivasan, Secretary, R. K. Agrawal, General Manager, IOB, and K. Lakshminarasimhan, Chief Regional Manager, Madurai Region, took part.

Grievance day

The Superintending Engineer, Madurai Electricity Distribution Circle,will hold a grievance day meeting at the office of the Executive Engineer (Distribution), TNEB, Tirumangalam, between 10.30 a.m. and 1.00 p.m., on September 21, according to an official release.

Consumers residing in the areas served by the Tirumangalam division can attend the meeting.
