Crack in bridge repaired

KOCHI, SEPT. 19. The crack in the Vaduthala-Chitoor Bridge, which was noticed on Saturday, has been repaired. But only two-wheelers are being allowed on the bridge. Buses now stop their service at one end of the bridge and commuters are forced to walk to the other end to continue their journey in other vehicles. The steel rods had been exposed owing to the crack. This was filled with concrete by Saturday evening. Construction is under way for a new bridge. But it will take a few months to be thrown open to traffic.

Bus operators threaten stir

The Ernakulam District Private Bus Operators' Association has threatened to go on a strike if the daily toll on the Mattancherry Bridge is hiked from Rs. 100 to Rs. 200. In a press release issued here today, the general secretary of the Association, K.A. Makkarkunju, said that the move to increase the toll would be opposed. The toll for private buses was fixed at Rs. 100 in October last year, following agitations by members of the public and different organisations. The `proposal' to double the toll is unjust. No reason has been given to hike the toll, he said.

Cultural fete concludes

`Brahma 2004', a three-day national scientific and cultural festival organised by the Adi Shankara Institute of Engineering and Technology, Kalady, concluded today.
