Need for

zebra lines

Sir, - The roads from the railway overbridge at Thampanoor, the Ayurveda College, Pattoor, Palkulangara, Thakaraparambu and Sreekanteswaram converge around the Uppidamoodu bridge at Vanchiyoor.

Whenever there is traffic disruption on the M.G. Road, buses to and from the East Fort are diverted through these roads. A vegetable and fish market also functions there. No zebra lines are provided here for crossing. The elderly and children find it difficult to cross this point. Authorities concerned are requested to provide zebra lines in this busy area.

Karamana.

Lack of civic

sense

Sir, - The garbage disposal mechanism in city is far from satisfactory mainly due to the lack of proper civic sense of some the residents.

Recently, the Corporation authorities chalked out a night schedule for removing garbage from fixed collection points. Yet, some people dump solid waste on the roadside and not at the collection points.

A case in point is the roadside of a small stretch between Pattom and Kesavadasapuram.

There are three major educational institutions - the Kendriya Vidyalaya, the Government Girls Model Higher Secondary School and the St. Mary's School - in this area.

People often dump garbage near these schools. The Corporation had also fixed these points as collection centres.

No one can pass through these areas without holding their nose. Careless and unmindful dumping of garbage should be stopped.

Kudumbasree units should be encouraged to take up garbage collection. Stringent action should also be taken against the litterbugs.

The Antony Government was working on a legislation providing for legal action to check careless dumping of garbage.

Hope the new Local Self-Government Minister will take the initiative to present the Bill in the next session of the Assembly.

- K.P.Ashok Kumar,

Pattom.

Provide

railings

Sir, - A portion of the new Killi bridge has been completed. But the authorities have not provided enough safety measures on the other side of the bridge, which is left open without railings.

The authorities are requested to look into the matter as a priority.

- K. Mony,

Valiasala.
