Land for airport terminal yet to be handed over

By S. Anil Radhakrishnan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 19. The 27 acres acquired by the Government three months ago for the construction of the proposed new terminal for the international airport here on the Chakka side is yet to be handed over to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

A top official of the AAI told The Hindu that the land acquired for the terminal project had not been handed over to them till date by the Government. The Special Tahsildar, Thiruvananthapuram, had informed the AAI in July that they had acquired 27 acres.

The AAI had been insisting on being handed over the 27 acres needed in the first phase of the project before starting the work for the terminal. Sources said the AAI would construct the boundary wall for the land acquired once it is handed over to them.

The Kerala State Pollution Control Board (PCB) had already given the nod for the terminal that will come up on the Chakka side. The Union Ministry of Environment had been approached for securing clearance for the terminal project, the AAI official said.

Revenue records

A senior official in the district administration said the 27 acres had been handed over to the Thiruvananthapuram Airport Development Society, set up by the Government for speeding up the ambitious project, a week ago after preparing the "mahasar".

It is for the society to officially hand over the acquired land to the AAI. "The land acquired by the Government belonged to different persons and the process to make relevant changes in the revenue records has commenced," the official added.

A meeting of the society chaired by the then Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, on July 21 had decided to expedite steps to hand over the land. The meeting had urged the AAI to commence the construction of the modern terminal on the Chakka side at the earliest. Sources said the new terminal project should have been included in the 100-day action plan chalked out by the Oommen Chandy Government and steps taken to put pressure on the AAI to commence the construction immediately.

Survey on

Meanwhile, the district administration has commenced survey on some stretches of the 120 acres to be acquired in the second phase. Sources said the survey is on commenced in localities where there is least resistance in handing over the land for the project.

The survey is on at Vayyamoola and near the Rubber Works for acquiring the land. Sources said the survey in Vallakkadavu area, where there is stiff resistance from the residents, would be taken up after the issue is sorted out through talks.

The Government had announced Rs. 10 crores in this year's budget for acquiring the remaining 120 acres.
