Kovalam was spruced up on the International Coastal Clean-up Day on Saturday.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 19. On the occasion of the International Coastal Clean-up Day, a team comprising more than 60 Coast Guard personnel and volunteer organisations such as the Kovalam unit of the Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association, Zero Waste - Kovalam, Eureka Sports Club, Vizhinjam, and students from various schools cleaned up the entire Light House beach, Hawa beach and Kovalam beach on September 18. Deputy Commandant O. G. Kutty, Commanding Officer, Coast Guard Station, Vizhinjam, led the team. During the cleanliness drive, discarded plastic bags, glass pieces, bottles, beverage cans, cloth, leather items, syringes, cigarettes, fishing nets, rope, etc., were removed and disposed of afar. The aim of the cleaning operation was to educate the local people on the hazards of coastal pollution and its remedies. The Coast Guard personnel also organised a community interaction programme among the fishing community. Coast Guard vehicles displaying banners and posters plied through the streets and fishing hamlets to create awareness on marine pollution and the need to create a clean coastal environment.
