Combing operation nets 14 accused

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 19. The city police have arrested the accused in 14 criminal cases and who were evading arrest during a combing operation carried out under all police station limits on Saturday.

The drive, which commenced at 4 p.m. ended at 12 midnight. Cases have been registered against 36 motorists who indulged in drunken driving, according to the police.

Action was also initiated against 188 persons for careless driving and against another 113 persons for causing public nuisance. During the drive, 116 lodges were also searched by the police and action initiated against 26 persons. The drive was carried out under the leadership of the City Police Commissioner, Balram Kumar Upadhay.

Traffic violation

As many as 292 persons were arrested for various offences and action initiated against 648 persons for violation of Motor Vehicle rules during the combing operation carried out in the rural areas of the district by the police on Saturday.

The combing operation, which commenced at 4 p.m. under all rural police station limits, ended around midnight. During the drive, 56 persons were found indulging in drunken driving and action was initiated against them. As many as 592 persons were booked for overspeeding, overtaking through the left side, careless driving and carrying excess load.

As many as 114 persons were arrested for causing public nuisance, 53 persons against whom warrants were issued, one person who was evading arrest and four for retailing of spirit. Eight persons who consumed liquor in the public were arrested during the drive.

The combing operation, under the instructions of the SP (Rural), P. Vijayan, was carried out by the Dy.SP of Attingal, Neyattinkara and Nedumangad sub-divisions.

Arrested

The city police have arrested S. Ajaya Ghosh (40), an accused in three abkari cases and a resident of Kezhekke Veedu, Chemchery, from Mannanthala under the Peroorkada police station limits. The accused was arrested around 9 p.m. on Saturday night by a police team led by the Additional SI (Peroorkada) Divakaran Nair. The accused was produced in the court of the Judicial First Class Magistrate II and remanded.

Woman held

The Thampanoor police have arrested Jayanthi alias Chandrika (35), a resident of Pattaykonam, Kallikad, who was found in suspicious circumstances near the RMS office on Saturday. According to the police, the accused was produced in the court.
