Seven held for running betting rackets

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 19. Seven people, who were allegedly running betting rackets on the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy in England, were arrested by the Crime Branch from different parts of the Capital on Saturday. Laptop, computers, telephone, mobile phones, cash and other articles were recovered from their possession.

Acting on a tip-off that some people were running a betting racket from an East Patel Nagar office, a Crime Branch team mounted a raid on Saturday and arrested five alleged bookies, Karnail Singh, Narender Kumar, Pawan, Kapil Bhalla and Pankaj Maheshwari.

At the time the place was raided, the accused were accepting stakes on the match being played between Sri Lanka and England at Southampton.

The police recovered a laptop, a colour television, two computers, one eight-line voice logger attached to the computer, 14 mobile phones and a register showing that the bookies had accepted bets to the tune of Rs. 10 lakhs.

During the operation, the police also recovered Rs. 4,800 in cash from the possession of the accused.

In another case, the Crime Branch mounted a raid on an R.K. Puram house and arrested two persons for allegedly running a betting racket.

The accused were identified as Parveen and Gulshan. Three mobile phones, three other phones, a television, a voice-recorder and Rs. 35,500 in cash were recovered from their possession.

The police said the accused had accepted betting amount to the tune of nearly Rs. 13 lakhs. They said Parveen was arrested last year on same charges.

Further probe in the other suspected involvement of the accused is on.
