People's War meet on September 30

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, SEPT. 19. In a rare show of strength in the very heart of the State administration after a 14-year-long gap, the People's War (PW) and the Janashakti will hold one of their biggest meetings here on September 30 as part of the `Chalo Hyderabad' programme.

A large number of sympathisers of the parties from all over the State are expected to attend the meeting.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, the PW State secretary, Ramakrishna, and the Janashakti secretary, Amar, accused the Government of scuttling the peace initiative by insisting on laying down of arms. "Instead of taking the talks ahead, the Government appears to be keen on disarming us," they pointed out.

Not to give up arms

They justified the refusal to lay down the arms while visiting villages stating that this would help them keep a watch on landlords, factionalists, anti-social elements and self-styled outfits. They demanded that clause no. 7 in the ceasefire agreement (laying down of arms) be withdrawn to ensure the progress of peace talks.

Maintaining that peace, self-reliance and land for the tiller would be the themes of the September 30 meeting, they charged the Congress with going back on its electoral promises. "It rode to power promising help to the poor, but is ignoring the promises," they said.

The two parties had held similar public meetings in different parts of the State after the Government announced the peace initiative. The first in the series of meetings was held at Mogilicherla in Warangal district, which witnessed a massive turnout of sympathisers.

Interestingly, top PW leaders stayed away from all these meetings. The Janashakti had organised a meeting in Sircilla of Karimnagar district last week.
