SINGAPORE: The Indonesian President, Megawati Sukarnoputri, on Monday trailed behind her challenger and former political associate, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, as counting began after the run-off poll for the highest executive post. The provisional counting trend indicated that Mr. Susilo had secured 58.64 per cent compared to Ms. Megawati's 41.36 per cent of the nearly 7.5 million votes counted so far. The run-off, the first of its kind, was called after none of the five candidates was able to muster the mandatory margin of votes in the earlier round, which too was the first presidential poll involving a direct choice, as distinct from an electoral college. The campaign themes centred mainly on economic development. Security concerns figured somewhat prominently after the terrorist strike at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta.
