Callousness unlimited

Sir, — "The good is oft interred with the bones" is the quote that pervades the predicament in which the Assam Rifles finds itself, not to speak of the poor light in which the army chief, N.C. Vij, is focussed in the editorial, "Callousness unlimited" (Sept. 18).

The Assam Rifles is not an occupational force but part of the national army that is called upon to safeguard the security and sovereignty of the nation.

The General has not erred in voicing his concerns, for soldiers speak out regardless of impending adverse consequences.

It was the editorial that was callousness unlimited.

Col. (retd.) K.N. Ganesan,

Sir, — The people of Manipur have taken to the streets for over two and a half months. The women even took the extreme step of protesting in the nude.

Even if the Centre has no intention of repealing the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, why should the Home Minister not undertake a couple of trips to Imphal for a few more rounds of talks? Why not assuage the feelings of Manipuris?

A. Jesu Raj,
Tiruchi, T.N.

Sir, — The continuous use of the AFSPA is not warranted. Nowhere has terrorism been tackled and solutions been brought about by the use of force. It was WHAM — winning the hearts and the minds of the people — that gave the break in Punjab. Transparency is the need of the hour.

Lt. Col. (retd.) R.V.S. Mani,
Madurai, T.N.
