NAGAPATTINAM, SEPT.20 . A large number of dog-bite cases coming to the government headquarters hospital have not been attended to for the past one week owing to the non-availability of anti-rabies vaccine in the hospital. The hospital receives 20 cases everyday from several parts of the district, mostly from rural areas. The patients are now being diverted to Government hospitals at Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Karaikal for treatment. Official sources told The Hindu that most of the government hospitals were running short of vaccine. Taking advantage of the non-availability of the vaccine in GHs, some private doctors administering a single dose anti-rabies vaccine such as `Equirab' (a vial costs nearly Rs.450 to 500) to the patients, which cannot be afforded by the poor people. The voluntary organisations appealed to the Collector and the Government to take immediate steps for providing the vaccine in the government headquarters hospital.
