NEW DELHI, SEPT. 20. Eager to prevent crimes against unsuspecting passengers by unscrupulous taxi drivers, the Central Industrial Security Force has intensified its drive against illegally plying taxis and touts at Indira Gandhi International Airport here. As part of the drive, which seeks to prevent a repeat of the attack witnessed on a 59-year-old Australian tourist, Dawn Enelie Griggs, in March this year in which the woman was robbed and brutally murdered by the driver of the taxi she had hired from the airport, CISF has apprehended 26 taxi and auto drivers on the charge of chasing passengers and causing them inconvenience. Asserting that most of these accused were trying to carry the passengers without getting the pre-paid tickets issued from the Delhi Traffic Police booths, CISF said such taxis are a great threat to the passengers as there is no record of which passenger went in which vehicle if the pre-paid entry is not done. And a crime on a passenger in such a case becomes difficult to detect. Stating that there have been many instances in the past where the passengers were duped, cheated or robbed by taxi or autorickshaw drivers, the CISF said in some cases they were even physically assaulted. As such the drive is aimed at creating a fear in the minds of those moving around with nefarious designs. Of the accused, the CISF said 24 were fined and challaned while the remaining two were handed over to the IGI Airport police station for necessary action. During the course of the drive, CISF personnel also nabbed 10 trolley "touts" who were engaged in the illegal activity of charging money from passengers for trolley service. Noting that the trolley service is provided free of cost at the airport, CISF said all the accused were handed over to the IGI police for further action.
