MADURAI, SEPT. 20. Twenty-three persons, including the All India Forward Bloc general secretary, L. Santhanam, MLA, were today granted anticipatory bail by the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court, in a case registered by the Usilampatti town police. Directing Mr. Santhanam to stay in Chennai and sign at the Assembly police station daily, Justice M. Thanikachalam allowed the others to stay in Madurai and report before the Judicial Magistrate-I. The police registered the case after the violence during the opening on September 5 of a memorial (mani mandapam) for P. K. Mookiah Thevar. All of them were booked under various sections of the IPC, including attempt to murder. In their petition, the MLA and the others alleged that though the ceremony was conducted based on the orders passed by the Bench, there was a lapse in security. They said their political rivals filed a false complaint against them, and prayed for anticipatory bail.
