MADURAI, SEPT. 20. The procession of Vinayaga idols, organised by the Hindu Munnani, passed off peacefully, amidst heavy security, here this evening. Over 90 idols from all 72 wards and from some suburban areas were taken out in a procession, which started at 5.00 p.m. from the Mottai Vinayakar Temple on East Masi Street. Over 1,000 activists of the Hindu Munnani participated. The procession, which wound its way through the South Masi Street, West Masi Street, North Masi Street, the Old Chokkanathar Temple Street and Thaikkal Street, took more than two hours to reach the Vaigai. Not to take any chance, the city policy made unprecedented security arrangements. Two Deputy Commissioners of Police, 10 Assistant Commissioners, 30 Inspectors, 75 Sub-Inspectors, 900 constables, 400 Armed Reserve personnel, 40 women constables, 2 Tamil Nadu Special Police companies and 100 Home Guards were deployed on security duty. Police pickets were posted at nearly 60 places, which were identified as sensitive. Heavy security was provided to all mosques and temples along the route. A posse of policemen was posted at the starting point, all along the route and the culmination point. Besides, a team of 40 Swift Action Force personnel was also drafted. They led the procession. Policemen in plainclothes were present at some places. All the top police officials, including the Commissioner of Police, Vijay Kumar, accompanied the procession till it reached the riverbanks. Many of whom who participated in the procession were drunk, and whistled and danced their way to the river.
