Former official accused of fraud

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, SEPT. 20. One more case of alleged fraud regarding professional courses, where a student was promised a medical seat in the State, has come to light.

Thilagavathy from Tamil Nadu has alleged that she was duped of Rs. 9 lakh in October 2002 by a former Government servant, after promising that he would get her son, Varunraj, a medical seat in St. John's Medical College.

Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, S. Muddukrishna, her advocate, said that Ms. Thilagavathy came to Bangalore in September 2002 with her son who had just passed his Pre-University course in Tamil Nadu along with some others. She allegedly met one Venkatesh, who reportedly said that he was an MLC, through one of her acquaintances, who said he could get her son a seat in a medical college.

He reportedly took her to B. Bheemaiah, the then Additional Secretary, Planning, Statistics, Science and Technology Department, who allegedly promised Ms. Thilagavathy that he would get her son an MBBS seat here and had taken Rs. 9 lakh from her, Mr. Muddukrishna said.

Mr. Venkatesh and Mr. Bheemaiah took all the documents including marks card, transfer certificate and community certificate, of Varunraj and allegedly gave Thilagavathy a fake admission card for St. John's Medical College and asked her to pay an additional Rs. 2 lakh. She suspected foul play on seeing the admission card and she and her son filed a complaint with the Lokayukta.

Mr. Muddukrishna said that even after the Lokayukta conducted an enquiry and submitted a report to the Government, asking the Government to take necessary action against Mr. Bheemaiah in December 2003, no action had been taken and he continued to be in Government service for sometime, after which he resigned on his own to contest elections from Hiriyur constituency.

The duped party has urged the Government to take necessary action against Mr. Bheemaiah so that they could get their money back.
