Housewife, driver murdered in separate incidents

BANGALORE, SEPT. 20. A housewife and the driver of a private bus were murdered in separate incidents reported from Basaveshwaranagar and Tilaknagar police station limits in the city.

Police said Yatiraju (44), a painter, allegedly stabbed his wife, Yashodamma (42), to death at his house at Premnagar in Basaveshwaranagar police station limits on Sunday night. Yatiraju was Yashodamma's second husband and she was his second wife, the police said.

Yatiraju suspected that Yashodamma had physical relationship with Velu (19), his son from his first wife, and allegedly stabbed her with a knife and ran away. Velu, who returned from work, saw Yashodamma lying in a pool of blood and rushed her to a hospital. She was declared brought dead, police said. The police have registered a case and are on the lookout for Yatiraju.

In the other incident, Prakash (45), driver of a private bus, was found murdered in the bus in 9th Block, Jayanagar, on Monday morning.

Police said the victim, a native of Harihara in Davanagere district, was employed in Bharath Travels, owned by Khifayathulla. On Sunday night, Prakash reportedly quarrelled with the driver of another bus and the two had slept in their buses that were parked near Khifayathulla's house on Eastern Road.

On Monday morning, when Prakash did not take the bus out, around 9 a.m. Khifayathulla got into the vehicle and found the driver dead on a seat. Prakash had suffered a contusion on the forehead, police said.

The body has been sent for autopsy to Victoria Hospital. The Tilaknagar police have registered a case.

Robbed

Three men threatened a petrol station employee with a knife and robbed him of Rs. 850 and a wristwatch in High Grounds police station limits on Sunday night.

Police said that around 1 a.m., miscreants waylaid Khader, an employee of N.K. Service Station on Thimmaiah Road, when he was returning home from work and relieved him of the cash and the watch near Veterinary Hospital on Thimmaiah Road. The High Grounds police have registered a case.

`Chain snatcher' caught

An alert public caught a youth, who allegedly snatched a gold chain worth Rs. 15,000 from C.D. Bhavya, a second year B.Sc. student of Mount Carmel College, on Monday.

Police said that around 10.30 a.m. the youth reportedly accosted Bhavya near her college and enquired about the route to Shivajinagar. As she was guiding him, he snatched her chain and started running. When Bhavya and her friends raised an alarm, passersby caught the youth and handed him over to the High Grounds police.

The police gave his name as Ram Beri (19), a resident of Malleswaram and a native of Madhya Pradesh. He worked here as tile polisher.

Sentenced

A city court on September 15 sentenced Gajendra (18) of Thiruvannamalai district in Tamil Nadu to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs. 1,000 for attempting to rape a minor girl.

The Jnana Bharathi police had filed a chargesheet against Gajendra in the court stating that on June 11, 2002, he had attempted to rape a four-year-old girl.

Fire put out

Fire services personnel put out a fire in a house on Bazaar Street in Ulsoor police station limits on Sunday. The fire is suspected to have caused when the compressor of the refrigerator in the house burst. No casualties were reported. Many household articles had been destroyed.
