Apunba Lup urged to lift blockade

By Iboyaima Laithangbam

IMPHAL, SEPT. 21. The Manipur Chief Minister, Okram Ibobi Singh, today appealed to the Apunba Lup to lift its blockade of two national highways. Since the highways were the lifelines of the State, the people would be deprived of food and life-saving medicines as a result of the prolonged blockade, he said.

The Apunba Lup, which is demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, has not reacted to the appeal. Mr. Singh said students had been coming to the Raj Bhavan and his office to surrender textbooks. But it was found that the books were old and not part of the present curriculum. With the boycott called by students' organisations ending yesterday, some schools were open today. But another boycott seems to be in the offing with students maintaining that "there is no meaning in attending classes while human rights are being violated."
