Brussels: Neelie Kroes, the incoming European Union Competition Commissioner, has agreed to cease all business activities for life to ensure her confirmation in the five-year post. Ms. Kroes (63), a Dutch Liberal who has sat on the boards of several European and American companies, has said she will not go back to business when she steps down in October 2009, officials said on Monday. She will not even be able to run a bed and breakfast in Scheveningen, the seaside resort near The Hague, when she retires, an E.U. spokesman said, giving details of her pact with the new Commission President, Jose Manuel Barroso. Ms. Kroes, who gave up all her directorships on September 1 has since sold all her shares and given up her options to overcome fears of any conflicts of interest when she inherits the competition portfolio from Mario Monti on November 1.
