Railway staff block tracks at Ghaziabad

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 21. Train traffic was hit for almost two hours in Delhi and Ghaziabad this afternoon after a group of railway employees blocked movement of trains near Ghaziabad railway station, protesting against the mysterious disappearance of the guard of a goods train. Over a dozen trains came to a standstill on the tracks near the railway station while movement of other trains was badly affected.

The agitated railway employees started protesting at Ghaziabad railway station in the afternoon alleging that neither the police nor the railway authorities were seriously pursuing the case of disappearance of Khemchand, a resident of Ghaziabad, who had gone missing from near Patel Nagar railway station in the Capital on Monday night. Later his blood-stained clothes were found from the brake van of the goods train. His whereabouts are still unknown.

After agitating on Monday, railways employees again started protesting on Tuesday afternoon and shouted slogans against railway administration. They also blocked train traffic by putting sleepers on the rails. Movement of almost a dozen trains was affected between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.. These included Ujjaini Express, Kaifiyat Express, Dehradun-Delhi Janshatabdi express, New Delhi-Jallandhar Intercity Express, Kathgodam-Delhi Sampark Kranti Express and Gorakhdham Express.

Hearing the news of traffic blockade, senior railway authorities along with Railway Police Force officials rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the employees and the relatives of the missing guard.

The railway staffers were demanding that the missing guard be traced immediately and more security measures put in place for all railway employees who travel in trains, particularly goods trains. After prolonged deliberations, the agitated employees called off their stir and rail traffic was resumed in only after 2-30 p.m.
