NEW DELHI, SEPT. 21. The Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president, Harsh Vardhan, today demanded that all villages of Delhi be exempted from paying house tax as promised by the Congress party in its manifesto for the Delhi Assembly elections not long ago. He also asked the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, to impose a cap of two and half times on the tax increase as promised by her on a number of occasions. Accusing the Congress of stabbing the people of rural Delhi in the back by going back on the promise of exempting villages from paying house tax, Dr. Vardhan said imposition of tax would put the villagers to inconvenience and lead to harassment by the authorities. It will lead to imposition of inspector raj on the poor villagers and increase corruption in the collection system, he added. Expressing his support for the September 24 strike and protest march by the Delhi businessmen and associations, the BJP president said that Ms. Dikshit had betrayed the people of Delhi by imposing such a huge financial burden on them under the UAM system. It was also promised that the new tax regime would not go beyond the two and half times limit. However, in a number of commercial and residential areas, the tax burden has gone up by almost ten to twelve times. He said in many commercial and business establishments running in rented premises, the property tax amount is going well beyond the annual rent, which is received by the owners of the premises. Now these owners are serving eviction notices to the holders of rented premises in order to revert back to residential premises status so as to pay less tax. This will not only create a livelihood crisis but also lead to a serious law and order situation in the Capital, he warned. Meanwhile, Dr. Vardhan said that the "Tiranga Yatra'' of senior BJP leader, Uma Bharati would enter Delhi tomorrow afternoon and would be accorded a big welcome. The yatra would pass through Delhi and enter Haryana. During its passage through Delhi, Ms. Bharati would be welcomed at several places by the party cadres.
