Law to protect elderly urged

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 21. The Police have sent a proposal to the Pondicherry Government to bring in necessary legislation to penalise those harassing or deliberately ignoring their parents, the Inspector General of Police, Mr P.R. Meena has said.

At a meeting with residents of Mudaliarpet Assembly constituency today, he said there was no political no interference in Pondicherry when police took up investigation of cases on the basis of complaints from the people.

Mr. Meena promised that he would crack down on eve teasing in the Union Territory. The localities identified by those who spoke earlier would be specifically monitored to prevent harassment of girls.

One resident said that action should be taken only after a thorough probe when it comes to complaints received from people under the Protection of Civil Rights Act. Residents also wanted night patrolling by police to be intensified in Mudaliarpet. A senior citizen suggested that the system adopted in pre merger days to curb rowdyism should be revived.

The residents welcomed the introduction of `women's desks' in police stations. Mudaliarpet police station was now showing improvement with women feeling free to file complaints to seek redressal under the law.
