CHENNAI, SEPT. 21. The Central Silk Board has introduced a quality symbol, "Silk Mark" for products to ensure their purity. It is an identifiable quality assurance label, affixed on pure and natural silk products of either mulberry, tassar, eri or muga silk, manufactured and sold by authorised users of the "Silk Mark," P. Joy Oommen, Member-Secretary told newsmen here today. Anyone who wanted to become a bona fide user of the mark should first become a member of the Silk Mark Organisation of India (SMOI), sponsored by the Textiles Ministry. The members could become authorised users, by registering their names and executing a licence agreement with the SMOI. The authorised users could use the SM logo on their products. All silk manufacturers, traders and dealers could become authorised users by becoming SMOI members. The Silk Mark would be akin to the Agmark symbol. In case of doubt, the consumer could test products under the Silk Mark label for their purity at the SMOI centres or at testing centres of consumer organisations authorised by the organisation. In the event genuine complaints, the authorised user was bound to compensate the consumer, Mr. Oommen said. Later Mr. Oommen launched the Silk Mark here.
