MADURAI, SEPT. 21. The police today withdrew a petition filed before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court pleading to cancel the bail granted to the Forest Ranger, R. Rajendran. Justice M. Thanikachalam dismissed the petition as withdrawn on the request of the public prosecutor. When the case came up for hearing, the prosecution was unable to state firm grounds on which the cancellation of bail was sought. The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Andipatti sub-division, Theni, filed the petition, pleading to cancel the bail granted to Rajendran by the Third Additional Sessions Court (Prevention of Civil Rights), Madurai. The lower court had granted bail to the ranger in a case registered against him under the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and two other sections of IPC.
Jayalakshmi episode
Another anticipatory bail petition filed by a suspended Additional Superintendent of Police, allegedly involved in the Jayalakshmi episode, was also withdrawn today after it came up for hearing before the Bench. C.R. Rajasekar said a more than three-year old case against him pertaining to the suicide of his wife was revived following the allegations of the Sivakasi woman, A. Jayalakshmi (32), against several police officers. Apprehending arrest, he pleaded to grant him anticipatory bail. Arguing the case for a while, counsel for the petitioner opted to withdraw the petition.
