The art of parenting

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, SEPT. 21. The University of Madras is all set to create a new breed of professionals with a diploma course on `Parent Counselling', which aims at making parenting a learned skill.

The Director of School Education, Tamil Nadu, S. Paramasivam, inaugurated the one-year, part-time course yesterday.

According to Cynthia Pandian, head, Department of Education of the university, this is a pioneering course that will cover human growth and development, concepts skills and techniques in parent counselling and parenting styles and skills.

The Secretary, Higher Education department, K. Gnanadesikan, inaugurated another new course for this academic year, a Master of Education, with the focus on educational leadership, policy and administration. Mr. Gnanadesikan welcomed the M.Ed Programme because there was a big need for teacher trainers.

According to him, every schoolteacher from class I to class VIII has to undergo 20 days of in-service training every year.

That means three lakh teachers being trained for 20 days by the Directorate of Teacher Education, he said.

Lauding the launch of the diploma course on parenting, he said, parents were under stress right through their ward's education — from LKG to class XII. This would be a major step forward, he said, in forming a reservoir of parent counsellors.

The Vice-chancellor, S.P. Thyagarajan, who presided over the function, said in the following academic years, postgraduate students would have the facility of doing simultaneous postgraduate diplomas, which would make them more employable.
