Prostitution racket smashed

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 21. Four young girls and an alleged pimp have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police for allegedly running a prostitution racket.

According to the police, a decoy customer was sent to strike a deal with the suspect who had parked his Maruti Zen car, in which four girls were also present, in a parking lot at Satyam Tower in Paschim Vihar on Monday evening. After the deal was finalised at Rs. 1,500 for each girl, the waiting police team apprehended all of them. All the girls were from West and South-West Delhi and aged between 19 and 29.

The alleged pimp, identified as Karan Thakur, a resident of Vasant Vihar, was earlier a taxi driver ferrying passengers to and from the airport. He used to supply the girls to various hotels, guesthouses and farmhouses in West and South-West Delhi.

Further investigations in the case are on.

Woman sets herself afire

A 28-year-old woman allegedly tried to commit suicide by setting herself afire in her house at Gokulpuri in North-East Delhi today.

According to the police, the incident came to light when Mohammad Yasin, a resident of Dyalpur in Gokulpuri, returned home for some purpose around 11-30 a.m. He found that his wife, Khursheeda, was lying on the floor with severe burn injuries. She was rushed to JPN Hospital where she was admitted with 100 per cent burn injuries. At the time of the incident, Khursheeda was alone in the house.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that Khursheeda had been married to Yasin, who used to put up a readymade garments stall by the roadside, for the past 12 years. The couple had been staying in their present one room accommodation for the past one month.

A case has been registered at the Gokulpuri police station and further investigations in the case are on.
