Ashok Jain welcomed at Town Hall

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 21. The Congress might have suspended him from the party for six years, but its leaders in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi gave a warm welcome to the Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee, Ashok Jain, when he returned to his chambers at Town Hall on Monday after a gap of over a month.

Ashok Jain, who was arrested by the CBI for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 1 lakh in August, was released on bail last week.

On Monday, when Mr. Jain came to Town Hall for the first time, he was accompanied by a large number of his supporters and Congress Councillors. The Leader of the House, Satbir Singh, and the Standing Committee Chairman, Mukesh Goel, welcomed him in his chambers.

Instead of persuading Mr. Jain to resign from the post of Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee, which was demanded by Mr. Singh and Mr. Goel, after his arrest, both the senior Congress leaders shared sweets with him. Mr. Jain is now scheduled to attend the next Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday.

However, Mr. Jain in his meetings with senior Congress Councillors and officials of the civic body claimed that his political opponents had got him trapped falsely. He asserted that he had no intention of resigning from the post of Deputy Chairman and would perform all the functions and chair and attend all the MCD meetings as he was doing earlier.

The only opposition member in the Standing Committee, Vijender Kumar Gupta, is likely to raise the issue of a tainted Councillor continuing as Deputy Chairman of the most powerful deliberative wing of the civic body.
