Illicit liquor recovered

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 21. Two Delhi Police constables trying to flag down a Santro car sustained minor injuries when the occupants tried to escape the police net at Najafgarh in South-West Delhi on Monday night. The car was then intercepted after a long chase and one person was arrested. The police recovered 24 bottles of illicit liquor from the car.

According to the police, a picket had been put up on Surajpur Road in Najafgarh for vehicle checking. Around 12-35 a.m., a Santro car appeared on the scene. They tried to wave it down but the occupants pressed on the accelerator in a bid to escape. Constables Ramesh and Rohtash, who tried to pull the barricades right in front of the car, were hit by the speeding car which managed to escape. The constables, who sustained minor injuries, were taken to hospital. Meanwhile, police gypsies immediately took up the chase.

The occupants of the car tried to dodge the police team several times but failed.

After about 5 km of chase, the car hit a culvert near Jharonda village and then slowed down. The chasing police team then overtook the car and arrested one of the occupants.

The other occupant managed to escape under the cover of darkness. A search of the car led to the recovery of 24 illicit liquor bottles.

The accused, identified as Deepak, a resident of Najafgarh, told the police that he had procured the liquor, meant for sale only in Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh, from the godown of one Ashok Wadia of Bahadurgarh.

A case of attempt to murder, obstructing a public servant in his duty and Excise Act at the Najafgarh police station and further investigations in the case are on.
